President Carter's 100th Birthday: A Tribute to Inspector Loretta Townsend

As former President Jimmy Carter celebrates his 100th birthday, it’s a poignant reminder of a remarkable inspector from Vanderburgh County, Indiana—Loretta (Palmer) Townsend. While many may remember Carter for his significant political achievements, it’s the whimsical peanut statue Loretta crafted for his visit to Evansville in 1976 that highlights her creativity and spirit. This delightful monument is not just a quirky roadside attraction; it encapsulates the love and dedication of a woman who made substantial contributions to her community and to the field of weights and measures.

The Infamous Peanut Statue

In anticipation of the Democratic Dinner honoring Carter, Loretta, was tasked with creating decorations for the event. Inspired by the playful image of Carter’s toothy smile superimposed on a peanut—a motif that appeared on campaign buttons—she envisioned a life-sized peanut statue. With the help of her friends James Kiely and Doyle Kifer, Loretta sculpted the peanut out of polyurethane foam, carefully layering it over a structure of metal hoops and chicken wire.

Before the statue could be unveiled, it underwent an unusual inspection by Secret Service agents, who cut a hole in its back to ensure there were no hidden threats. This amusing detail became a quirky part of the statue’s story, showcasing Loretta’s ability to blend humor with her creativity.

After its debut at the Democratic Dinner and a stint in the Westside Nut Club Fall Festival Parade, the peanut made its way to Plains, Georgia, where it was awkwardly propped at the railroad depot. Eventually, it found a permanent home thanks to Maxine Reese, who saw the potential for it to become a beloved roadside attraction. Today, the peanut statue remains a symbol of community spirit and ingenuity, drawing visitors from far and wide.

A Champion of Weights and Measures

While the peanut statue is a cherished piece of local lore, Loretta Townsend’s true legacy lies in her impactful work as a weights and measures inspector. With a career spanning decades, she was a pioneer in ensuring fairness and integrity in trade across Indiana. Serving as the Department Head for Vanderburgh County Weights and Measures since 1980, Loretta played a crucial role in helping many counties establish effective weights and measures ordinances and fine structures, which empowered inspectors to enforce laws more effectively.

Her advocacy and expertise elevated the standards for weights and measures inspections, benefiting both consumers and businesses. As a past president of the Indiana Association of Weights and Measures Inspectors, Loretta was instrumental in creating a network of professionals dedicated to upholding the integrity of trade practices.

A Legacy of Leadership and Community Service

Loretta’s influence extended far beyond her professional achievements. She was an active community leader, serving as president of the Vanderburgh County Women’s Democrat Club and engaging with various civic organizations, including the VFW Auxiliary and the American Legion. Her resourcefulness and determination were evident in her mantra: “If I can’t get in the front door, guard the back door.” This philosophy not only propelled her career but also inspired those around her to strive for excellence.

Loretta passed away on February 10, 2017, but her legacy continues through the systems she helped establish and the countless lives she impacted. Her daughters, Tara Stokes and Connie Shumaker, carry forward her commitment to service and community engagement.

Honoring a Lasting Impact

As we reflect on President Carter’s milestone birthday, let us also honor the life and contributions of Loretta Townsend. Her creativity in crafting the peanut statue may bring smiles, but it is her dedication to weights and measures that truly exemplifies her lasting impact. Loretta’s work ensured fairness in trade across Indiana, serving as a reminder of the importance of integrity in all we do. Here’s to Loretta—an unsung hero whose story deserves to be celebrated alongside the milestones of our nation’s leaders!
